FL studio, one of the most popular music production programs out there runs on pretty much any computer. The minimum system requirements can be met by most computers that are not already quite old. That being said, music production is a resource intensive task, and having a machine that can handle the workload is important if you want good results.

System Recommendations

The below recommendations are also crafted so that you have a good all around laptop that will last you a long time. The specs are better than what are listed as requirements for FL studio.

MinimumRecommended
CPUIntel 9th gen i5 or betterIntel 10th gen i5 or better
GPUNoneOne that fits your budget
RAM8 GB16 GB or more
SSD256 GB512 GB or more

If you get a laptop that meet the specs above then you have a decent laptop. The biggest mistake I see people do when purchasing a laptop is to get an older CPU. There is no reason to get an 8th gen CPU when the 11th gen is already rolling out.

Below are three laptops that we think are among the best options.

Best Laptops For FL Studio

There are a lot of laptops out there that you can use to run FL studio. Some are better than others, but mostly they will probably work fine. We have gathered what we think are some of the best options below so that you have a good starting point for your research.

MSI GS66 Stealth 10SGS-031

Image of MSI GS66

One of my favorite laptops is the MSI GS66. This laptop offers raw power that few other laptops do. The only downside of this computer is that it is quite expensive, but if you want the best then you have to pay for it. MSI is also a brand that has a lot of experience with building high end gaming laptops, something that happens to also be good for music production.

There are many things that make this laptop an excellent choice. One of them is that it has the 10th generation i9-10980 which is one of the best CPU options you have. For tasks that require a lot of computations, which music production does, you want as many cores as you can get. This particular CPU has 8 cores which is very good for a laptop CPU, but you can get more if you get a desktop machine. If you have a look at the spec requirements you can see that the better your CPU the more FX and instruments you can run on FL studio, which tell you that the CPU is one of the most important parts in an FL studio laptop.

Another part that is important for music production in order to get the most out of it is a GPU. This laptop comes with one of the best laptop GPUs out there, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q. This GPU makes the laptop suitable not only for playing video games is also a good laptop for machine learning. The GPU is one area where this laptop really stands out from many of its competitors. If you want to save some money, then the GPU is one area where you will have to take a performance cut.

There is 32 GB of DDR4 RAM on this computer. 32 GB should be more than enough for FL studio for quite some time. You should be able to upgrade this in the future as this computers would last you a long time. Even though this laptop has a lot of it, RAM is not something that you should put too much consideration on. The reason is that you can quite easily upgrade the amount in a laptop. You can do it yourself if you know how, or you can have a computer expert do it

Overall the MSI GS66 is our pick as the best laptop for FL studio because of its power. If you want something cheaper then there are a few options for you below.

The laptop has a lot of other nice features that you should check out on Amazon. If this laptop fits in your budget then this might be the best laptop for FL studio.

Razor Blade 15

The Razer Blade 15 is one of the best laptops for FL studio. Even though it is a so called gaming laptop it actually looks quite good. The only thing giving it away is the logo on the back of the lid.

This new version of the Razer blade 15 has a 10th generation Intel Core i7-10750H with 6 cores. This is a great CPU for more than just music production.

Another important component when doing resource intensive tasks is a GPU. The GPU is not just for graphics, it is actually well suited for any task that requires a lot of computations. This laptop comes with the Nvidia RTX 2060 GPU which is not the best one on this list, but it is not very far away. If you simply want the most powerful GPU then you should have a look at the MSI, but you will be paying an extra premium for it. One of the reasons that the Razer blade is the top pick is because of its price. Although not cheap, it does offer a lot of good things for your buck. Razer actually used to offer a free producer license to FL studio back in 2018, but unfortunately that offer is not available any more. Still, Razer is a good brand for creators.

The component I consider very important for FL studio is the type and amount of RAM. The Razer comes with 16 GB RAM which is a decent amount.

Overall this laptop is a top pick because it has a great CPU, good GPU, and good RAM. It also has other great components that are not directly as important for music production, but that make it a good overall laptop. While offering all that it does, it still comes in at a reasonable price for a high end laptop. There are more powerful options on this list but they also cost more.

The main reason to get this laptop over the MSI would be the price. You should check out the computer and what other things it has to offer on Amazon to see if there are any other features that might be important to you. For example, this laptop has a really good screen.

Acer Predator Helios 300

If you can get over the fact that the Helios looks like a gaming laptop then this is a good option. Gaming laptop features are also features that are good for music production. Music production is resource intensive and therefore you will benefit from the same powerful parts. One reason for getting this laptop over the Razor is because of its low price. But, a lower price also means weaker parts. Luckily it still has a great CPU.

The laptop has the Intel Core 17-10750H, which is one of the best you will find. As you will notice, a lot of expensive gaming laptops have this very CPU, so you should feel fairly comfortable that this is a good option.

Despite being a reasonably well priced laptop it still has a good GPU. The new Helios 300 comes with the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060. This is a great GPU for a laptop and makes it suited for things such as gaming as well. It is not so important for FL studio though.

As with the Razer this laptop has 16 GB of RAM. This is sufficient, and although important it is not crucial as you can get more later. Overall, this laptop is a good contender. There is also a 512 GB SSD on board which is quite good.

You should have a look at the other features of this laptop on Amazon.

See the Acer Predator on Amazon.

Acer Aspire 5

The Acer Aspire is a staple budget laptop that actually meets the requirements for FL studio. Acer keeps iterating on this model and it keeps being a great option for most people.

The CPU is a new Intel Core i5-1035G1. It is not the most powerful CPU around, but it is a new 10th gen and not as power hungry as some of the mode powerful i7 models that you find on this list.

A cool feature of this laptop is that it has a fingerprint reader, making it more convenient to have a strong password as you don’t have to type it in every time.

There is 8 GB of RAM on board. This is sufficient, and around what is standard in this kind of laptop. I would not go any lower than 8GB if 2021.

As far as storage goes there is a 256 GB SSD which should suffice, but picking up an external hard drive would be helpful.

See the Acer Aspire on Amazon.

MSI Modern 15 A10RAS-097

The MSI Modern 15 is another laptop that is well suited for music production but is also more friendly to your wallet. In terms of power, you get what you pay for, and as this is more on the lower spectrum of a mid-range laptop, it still packs a punch but not as much as some of the others on this list. The main reason for getting this over any of the others would be the price.

Even though the laptop is cheaper, it still comes with the Intel Core i7 (i7-10510U). The CPU is very important for music production, and therefore for FL Studio. Although not the most powerful i7, it is still an i7.

One area where it really does not live up to the others is with the GPU, but that is not really important for FL studio anyways, so it doesn’t really matter. It is still okay for video games, but you can’t expect to be ale to play on the highest settings with the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti that it comes with.

The SSD is 512 GB which is good for this price.

There is also only 8 GB of RAM. This is something you should look into upgrading relatively fast if you want to go with this laptop. 8 GB will get you a long way, but so many programs eat up RAM these days so if you want to get optimal performance then you may want to get 16 GB.

Overall this is a great laptop at a great price point. You should check out the product page to see if there are any other aspects of the laptop that you find interesting to you.

ASUS ROG Strix Scar 15

Another powerful option for FL studio is the ASUS ROG Strix Scar 15. You don’t need the really powerful GPU that comes in many of these laptops, but finding a machine that has all the other components without one is not so easy. You also don’t need the extremely gaming screen that this laptop has. It has a 240 Hz refresh rate, which means it is one of the better laptops for gaming in terms of screen quality.

The laptop comes with the Intel Core i7-10875H, which is an 8 core CPU. One of the key things to look for is a great CPU, and this is among the best on the list.

The GPU is the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 super. You certainly don’t need a GPU as good as this for music production, but if you are interested in other things such as gaming then this is a great choice. It is also good for the longevity of the laptop as this is a rather new model. There are still a lot of laptops with GPUs that are several years old, but of course this also adds quite a bit to the total price. If it does not fit in your budget then have a look at one of the more budget friendly options.

The laptop has other really cool features that might interest you that you should check out on the product page.

What You Should be Looking

Below are some of the things you need to consider when doing your research. In order to find the best laptop for fruity loops (FL) Studio you should take the below into consideration.

What amount of storage to get for FL studio

Most laptops, unless they have a very small disk, will be able to meet the 4 GB of free disk space requirement. That being said, many cheaper notebooks only have a 128 GB SSD. If you have this little space you won’t be able to install a lot or keep many files. You probably want to get a laptop with an SSD that is at least 256 GB. That will leave you some room for other programs as well. You can always get an external hard drive that you can keep your assets on too.
Most laptops these days come with an SSD. SSDs are more expensive than hard drives but they are much faster. The performance difference with an SSD versus a regular Hard Drive can be quite significant. That being said, since Hard Drives are cheaper you also get more storage space with them. Some laptops have a combination of hard drive and SSD but often they are a bit more expensive.

What amount of RAM to get for FL studio

For mid range laptops the new standard is 8 GB of RAM. You will only find 4 GB options on low end computers. 8 GB should be enough for many tasks you might want to perform. That being said, you will find 16 GB to be better is most circumstances. RAM is quite important for the laptop to be able to smoothly handle a lot of things at the same time. Because of that there is often a significant performance increase related to getting more RAM. This performance increase is only noticeable up to a certain point, and more than 16 GB would not make much of a difference for you at this point. It is possible that 32 GB would be good for you, and you can quite easily upgrade this on most computers.

Another thing to consider is the type of RAM. You will see that there are two types of RAM, DDR3 and DDR4. DDR4 is newer. It is both faster and it uses less power. It is a lot better to get a computer with DDR4 RAM. Not only because it is better, but also because you can’t upgrade from DDR3 to DDR4. In a laptop you can usually upgrade to more amount of RAM, so if you get a computer with 8 GB of DDR4 RAM you can buy another 8 GB chip as there are usually two slots. But if you get the DDR3 kind then you will be limited to upgrading to DDR3, which will be limiting the longevity of the computer.

In addition to considering what is the best laptop for FL Studio, you also have to consider how long you want to keep the computer. The better the parts the better for FL studio, and also the longer it is likely to last.

Should you get a GPU for FL studio

Music production is a heavy resource consuming tasks. It will stretch your CPU to its limits, and one thing you can do in order to get better performance is to have a dedicated GPU. GPUs are great for other things than just graphics. They are amazing at performing computations. To offset some of the load on the CPU you could take advantage of the GPU. Many mid range laptops do come with GPUs. I recommend getting a GPU in any computer that will be used for resource demanding tasks. That being said, you will probably not notice much if any difference when using FL studio.

What Screen Should You be Looking For when using FL studio?

FL studio has a lot going on in the UI, and you want to make sure that you can comfortably see all the things. Because of that, I recommend that you at least get a 15 inch computer. There are many really good looking 13 inch computers out there but 13 inches is quite small. For productivity you should either get a 15 inch or a 17 inch. Most laptops these days come with full HD screen and you don’t need anything better than that.

What CPU should you get for FL studio

You will notice that most computers either have an 8th generation or a 9th generation Intel CPU. Some low end notebooks also have 7th gen versions. I recommend that you get an i7 that is either an 8th or a 9th generation. As the official requirements state, the better the CPU the better FL studio will run. A 9th gen i7 will pretty much be as good as it gets for a computer. The CPU is the brain of the computer and you don’t want to skimp on this. That being said, if you are looking for a cheaper option then you will be okay with an 8th gen too. I would recommend that you stick with an i7 model though.

Alternative to a laptop for FL studio

Laptops can sometimes be a bit on the expensive side. I want to also advice you to think about building your own desktop computer. You will be able to get more power and spend less money doing so. It will also last you longer as you can more easily upgrade the individual components.

Of course, a desktop comes with its own setbacks, such as you are not able to bring it around. If you are in college still then this might be a big deal breaker for you. But if you are looking for the most bang for your buck then you might want to consider going with a custom build desktop instead of a laptop. Even a ready made desktop can give you at least more power than what a lot of laptops will.

This way you can also more easily chose to not have a good GPU as well. It is much more difficult to find the right laptop with the right parts than picking the parts and putting it together yourself.

Final Comments on Laptops for Music Production

The best option for FL studio is a computer that has a lot of power. Music production is very resource intensive task and you need a laptop that has the parts to match. That being said, that does not mean that you have to have the latest and greatest. It just means that the better the computer the better performance you will get. Ultimately it gets down to your budget. I have provided mid-range and upper range computers in this guide. They are great options for music production and you will be able to use them for any other activity as well. The best computer for fl studio is one that will give you good performance for your budget.
