Even their official requirements are quite demanding. Often you will find that the manufacturers’ requirements are much lower than even what low budget laptops offer, but for Revit there are some steep requirements if you want to go with their pro plan.

This laptop is for those who want the best option. There are a lot of laptops out there, but we feel that the MSI is one of the better ones. It is not a cheap laptop by any means, but there are more budget friendly options also if that is what you are looking for. 

Why do we like this laptop

One of the things I like the most about the MIS GS66 is that it manages to pack so many good components into the sleek frame. You get a brand new 10th gen Intel CPU with 8 cores, one of the best laptop GPUs on the market, and a 1 TB SSD. The number of cores on the CPU is another great thing that we like, the more cores the better. Revit is able to use multiple threads, and the more cores you have the more threads you have, and the more you are able to do in parallel. Rendering models take a lot of compute power, and the combination of a good CPU and a good GPU is important.

What do we not like about this laptop

Although this is our top pick, it does come at a price. One thing that we don’t like about the laptop is that it costs quite a bit. That is obvious when you see what you get, but it is still a big investment. We believe that you get a lot for your money, so if you are looking for one of the best options then you should seriously consider the MSI GS66. 

How does this laptop meet our criteria

We wrote down quite a few criteria that we want to evaluate each option against. The first is the official requirements from Revit. They have three different requirement levels, each one being based on what you want to do. There is the performance, value, and minimum requirements. This laptop should actually meet the performance requirements, making this laptop a very good option for you.

In terms of new components, the MSI is covered where it counts. The two components that we will look at are the CPU and the GPU. The GPU is the RTX 2080, which is pretty much the best laptop GPU currently, and the CPU is a brand new Intel Core i9-10980HK. I would say that the laptop meets this criteria.

This laptop is for those who want a lot of power, but don’t want to spend the money on the MSI GS66. The Razer blade is not as powerful as the MSI, but it is also not too far away. Although still not cheap, if you are looking for something that is a little easier on the wallet then the Razer is a good choice. 

Why do we like this laptop

The Razer Blade has always been a laptop that I like. The laptop line has been around for a long time and has a great reputation. The 2020 refresh of the laptop comes with a brand new CPU that offers a little more than the previous model. One of the main reasons that I like this laptop is because of the pricing compared to what you get. Great parts are not cheap, but the Razer strikes a good balance for those who are looking for value for money.

What do we not like about this laptop

The main thing that I don’t like about this laptop is that the CPU does not have 8 cores. An 8 core CPU would be more expensive, but the more cores the better. 6 cores is still very good though, and should be more than sufficient for most.

How does this laptop meet our assumptions

This laptop should meet everything in the performance plan except for the amount of RAM. RAM is not difficult to upgrade yourself, so this is not a big downside. The laptop has 16 GB which should be enough to get you started, and you can always buy some more in the future if you feel that you need more. 

The components in this laptop are all fairly new. The GPU is the RTX 2070, which has been out for a while, but the RTX series is currency the best that you are going to get in terms of laptop GPUs. The CPU is a brand new Intel i7-10750H, which will last you a long time. This CPU is probably going to be fairly common in high end gaming laptops once more start to get the new Intel CPUs. 

Razer has been around for a long time and is a well liked company. They make very good laptops, and the Razer line is one of the better ones in my option. I would be happy to recommend the Razer to anyone. 

There is a full HD screen with a 144Hz refresh rate. As with the MSI, the high refresh rate is only beneficial if you play video games, but a lot of people do that. I would stick with the full HD option as you are unlikely to be able to see too much difference, and it would lower your performance. 

The pricing of the Razer is good. It is not cheap, but it is not the most expensive option. You will find a lot of laptops that hover around this price range, and they are for the most part fairly competitive. 

Overall I think you would find the Razer Blade to be a great option for Revit and for personal use.

This laptop is for those who are looking for great parts, but still something that is cheaper than the Razer Blade. It is for someone who is willing to go a bit lower on the parts in exchange for a more budget friendly option. If you want to go lower still, then check out the Acer option.

Why do we like this laptop

The main reason why I like this laptop is that it offers nearly as good performance as laptops that are much more expensive. This laptop does have the previous generation cpu, now that the 10th gen is rolling out, but this is a great CPU that has been a staple in high end gaming laptops for a long time. This CPU will be able to serve you for a long time, and coupled with the great RTX 2060 it will be able to perform well for Revit too. 

What do we not like about this laptop

The cheaper the laptop gets, the weaker the parts get too. The main drawback with this laptop is the previous generation CPU and the 8 GB of RAM that it comes with. The RAM you can deal with by adding more, but the CPU you are stuck with. The CPU is still great, and many laptops in this price category will not have anything much better for quite some time.

How does this laptop meet our criteria

This laptop meets the minimum requirements for Revit, with the amount of RAM being what keeps it out of the other categories. You can easily remedy this by purchasing some new RAM. There is one 8 GB stick in the laptop, so if you buy one more then you have 16 GB, and using two sticks is better than one also. 

The CPU is the 9th gen, which is not the newest on the market anymore, but it is fairly recent. It is also the CPU that has been the most common in high end gaming laptops for a long time, so it is a very good CPU. The GPU has also been around for a while now, but it is one of the best GPUs for a laptop on the market currently. Overall, the parts in this laptop are fairly new.

MSI is a great company with a good reputation for making high end gaming laptops. You can be sure that both the GS66 and the GF65 are great laptops from a great manufacturer.

The screen is a 15 inch full HD with a 120 Hz refresh rate.

4. Powerful gaming laptop – ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17

This laptop is for those who want a slightly larger screen real estate, something that can be quite useful when working with Revit. The laptop offers comparable specs as some of the other laptops, but the larger screen size is one of the unique features in this list.

Why do we like this laptop

There are many things to like about this laptop. Increased screen size, new parts, reputable manufacturer, the list goes on. A few specific things that I like in relation to using it for revit are the 10 the generation CPU, the RTX 2070 GPU, and the 17 inch screen. Unless you want to have an external monitor, it might be useful for you to have that bigger screen. It will be less flexible because the laptop is larger, but it is a tradeoff that is worth it for many. I also like the fact that there are quite a few configuration options so that you can make the laptop fit your budget better.

What do we not like about this laptop

This is one of those laptops where it is hard to put your finger or something. The screen is good, the CPU is good, and the GPU is good. The only thing is that there is only 16 GB of RAM. This is not something you cant upgrade yourself, and many of the other options on this list also have 16 GB. 16 GB is sufficient for most, but it would be better if it had 32GB and met the performance requirements. 

How does this laptop meet our assumptions

For the Revit requirements it meets the value requirements. If you were to upgrade to 32 GB of RAM it would meet the performance requirements. If you go for this laptop then perhaps start out with the 16 GB and upgrade if you feel like you need it.

As far as the components go they are all good. New CPU, newer GPU, new screen. This laptop has some of the best parts in all the areas.

ASUS has been around for a long time and has a great reputation. It is hard to go wrong here.

The laptop has a full HD screen with a 300Hz refresh rate. The refresh rate is good if you are into gaming, for Revit it does not matter. The 17 inch size does matter though and is a great thing for Revit.

5. Cheaper budget option – Acer Nitro 5

The last option we will look at is the Acer Nitro 5. This is a cheaper budget option, so don’t expect nearly as good performance as with any of the laptops above.

Who is this laptop for

This laptop is for those who are looking for something that is a lot more budget friendly than the options above, but still want something that can offer quite a bit of power. This laptop was chosen as the cheapest budget option because it has a decent GPU and an OK CPU.

Why do we like this laptop

I like this laptop because it comes with the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650. This is a pretty decent GPU for this price range. It is not the newest option available anymore, but it is still OK. 

What do we not like about this laptop

As this is more of a budget option, there are many things that are not as good as with the other laptops. The first is that there is only 8 GB of RAM, something that you could remedy yourself. The second is a smaller 256 GB SSD. This is probably okay for most, but it can fill up quickly if you want to install a game or two. 

How does this laptop meet our assumptions

This laptop does not fit the criteria that we set out at the beginning as well as the other options. It does meet the minimum system requirements, so it is still a viable option for you.

As far as the components go, the GPU is not as new as it could be, but that does not mean it is a good budget option.

Acer is a well known company that has been making computers for a very long time, so you do not have anything to be worried about there. 

The full HD screen is an okay option. It is not as good as the others, especially for gaming, but for Revit it should be just fine.

The pricing of this laptop is much better than the others. If you are looking for a budget friendly option then definitely check out this one.

What to look for in the best laptop for Revit

The Revit requirements aren’t as specific as you might want them to be.

CPU

For CPU it says under the performance plan that you can use up to 16 cores, which is a lot. Most laptops will not have more than 6 cores on the CPU. It also mentions that the best CPU for Revit is the highest affordable speed that you can afford. We will look for a 9th generation Intel i7 with 6 cores in the best laptop for Revit, as it won’t get much better currently.

RAM

As far as RAM goes it says 16 GB is usually sufficient. 8 GB is the new minimum for mid range laptops, so 16 GB is not unreasonable. More than that you would usually only get on gaming laptops. You can also upgrade the amount at a later point if you want. I would like to add that in addition to the amount of RAM you should get, you should also think about the type. Not all RAM is equal, and you will notice that laptops usually comes with either DDR3 or DDR4 type RAM. DDR4 is faster and uses less power. You should get a minimum of 16 GB of DDR4 RAM. You will also be stuck with the type of RAM that you get, as you cant switch between DDR3 and DDR4 as the chips have different forms.

GPU

They recommend getting a graphics card that is DirectX 11 capable with shader model 5. A GPU is good for many things, so you can benefit in more areas if you have one. I can often help taking some of the load off the CPU with a lot of programs so you can use one even if you don’t do other things such as playing video games.

Screen

As far as the screen goes they have a minimum resolution of 1920 x 1200, and a maximum of ultra HD (3840 x 2160). If their minimum really is 1920 x 1200 then most full hd screens will not be optimal as they are 1920 x 1080. That means that we have to go with one of the ultra HD screen options to really get the best performance out of the laptop screen. As far as the size of the screen you should get a minimum of 15 inches. This is not a product requirement, but you need at least that size for any sort of productivity. 13 inches is very small and doing model work on such a small screen will not be good. You might also want to invest in an external screen at some point so that you can get more screen real estate.

Storage

As far as disk space goes it requires 5 GB of free space. You also want to make sure that you have enough space to save all your models and any other programs you might want on the laptop. Most common storage size options these days range from 256 GB to 512 GB. As the best laptop for revit will be quite powerful and not very cheap, they often come with larger storage space. It says that if you get a hard drive it should be at least 10,000 RPM. We are going for an SSD drive, and if it has a hard drive it will be a secondary one that can be used to store files.

Alternatives to a laptop for Revit

If you are willing to consider a desktop then you should. A desktop can offer you more for your money and it would be easier to upgrade in the future, offering you a longer time on the device. 

Desktops have their own drawbacks of course, with a big one being that you can carry them around. They also take up more space, which needs to be dedicated and is tough to move. 

If you were to go for a desktop then you should try to at least get as powerful parts as in the laptops above. You can either go for a pre-built one, or if you want a little more bang for your buck then you can build your own.

Conclusion

Revit is a demanding software. You will need quite a bit of computational power to be able to get the best performance out of it. You can probably make due with most laptops, but the best laptop for Revit is a powerful one. If you look in the gaming category you will find a lot of suitable laptops. If you are short on budget then you might be better off building a desktop from parts, as you can get a little more value for your money that way.
